M. Patricia Rivera, MD, a renowned pulmonologist with expertise in lung cancer, is serving on the editorial board for MerckManuals.com, an authoritative medical reference.

Dr. Rivera is chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where she also serves as the C. Jane Davis & C. Robert Davis Distinguished Professor in Pulmonary Medicine.
Dr. Rivera is also an associate director at the Wilmot Cancer Institute, adjunct professor of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the co-director of the North Carolina Lung Screening Registry.
Dr. Rivera originally co-founded the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program and founded the Lung Cancer Screening Program at UNC. Dr. Rivera served as President of the American Thoracic Society in 2023-2024.
Dr. Rivera graduated from the Stony Brook School of Medicine in 1985. She completed a residency in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital, followed by fellowships in pulmonary medicine at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and critical care medicine at North Shore University Hospital.
