Gonzalez Abbott Changes Leadership Abbott, a global, broad-based healthcare company with headquarters in Abbott Park, Ill., has appointed Richard A. Gonzalez as president and chief operating officer. Mr. Gonzalez replaces Jeffrey M. Leiden, M.D., Ph.D., who stepped down to pursue other career interests. Mr. Gonzalez, a 29-year Abbott veteran, previously was president and chief operating officer of the medical products group. Abbas Hussain Rich Pilnik Lilly Makes Senior Leadership Changes Eli Lilly, Indianapolis, an innovation-driven pharmaceutical developer, has appointed Abbas Hussain as president of European operations. Since joining Lilly in 1988, Mr. Hussain has held multiple leadership positions throughout Europe. Most recently, he was regional VP. He holds a joint degree in medicinal chemistry and pharmacology from Loughborough University. He succeeds Rich Pilnik, who has been named group VP and chief marketing officer for the company. Mr. Pilnik oversees Lilly’s global strategy for sales and marketing. He also has joined the company’s operations committee. Mr. Pilnik joined Lilly in 1983 and has achieved strong sales and marketing results in multiple countries. He has a B.A. in economics from Duke University and an MBA from Northwestern University. Dr. Nancy Joseph-Ridge TAP Names Executive to Lead R&D Nancy Joseph-Ridge, M.D., has been named VP of research and development at TAP Pharmaceutical Products. TAP, Lake Forest, Ill., is a joint venture between Abbott Laboratories and Takeda Pharmaceutical. Dr. Joseph-Ridge, 47, has been with TAP since 2002. Most recently, she was therapeutic area head, internal medicine and rheumatology, and department head, publications, medical writing, and clinical-trial registries. Previously, she worked for Searle in drug safety and clinical development. She earned her M.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Peter Loescher Merck Adds President, Global Human Health Merck, a global, research-driven pharmaceutical company based in Whitehouse Station, N.J., has appointed Peter Loescher to the newly created position of president, global human health. He has direct responsibility for Merck’s four marketing and sales divisions. Mr. Loescher, 48, most recently served as president and CEO of GE Healthcare Bio-Sciences. Dr. Hilary Malone Bernard Poussot Wyeth Hires and Promotes Wyeth, a research-driven pharmaceutical and healthcare products company based in Madison, N.J., has appointed Hilary Malone, Ph.D., as senior VP, global regulatory affairs, at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Previously, she was VP, European regulatory affairs, at Astra Zeneca. Dr. Malone received her doctorate in neuropharmacology from Dundee University in Scotland followed by postdoctoral appointments in pharmacology in the United Kingdom and the United States. Additionally, Wyeth has promoted Bernard Poussot to president and vice chairman. In addition to Mr. Poussot’s current responsibilities for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Wyeth R&D, he has assumed leadership for the Wyeth Consumer Healthcare and Fort Dodge Animal Health divisions of Wyeth. Mr. Poussot, 54, began his career at Wyeth in 1986 and most recently served as executive VP, Wyeth. Raymond Russo Schering-Plough Names VP, Global Cholesterol Marketing Raymond Russo has been promoted to VP of global cholesterol marketing at Schering-Plough, a global, science-based healthcare company with headquarters in Kenilworth, N.J. Most recently, Mr. Russo was Schering-Plough’s VP of U.S. cholesterol marketing. He has been with the company since 1982. He has an MBA in accounting and B.A. in economics from Rutgers University. Dr. Patrick Vallance GSK Appoints Drug Discovery Head GlaxoSmithKline, Philadelphia, a research-based pharmaceutical company, has named Patrick Vallance, M.D., senior VP, drug discovery. He succeeds Allan Baxter, who was appointed senior VP, medicines development. Dr. Vallance, who is based in the United Kingdom, has served on GSK’s R&D advisory board since 2004. He previously was the head of the division of medicine. He earned his scientific and medical degrees at the University of London. Biotech POOL William N. Anderson Scott Carmer Dr. Pamela M. Klein Dr. Mary B. Sliwkowski Genentech Appoints VPs Genentech, a biotechnology company based in South San Francisco, Calif., has named William N. Anderson to VP, sales and marketing, immunology. In this newly created position, Mr. Anderson, 39, is responsible for leading the sales and marketing activities for the company’s immunology products and pipeline. He joins Genentech from Biogen Idec, where he most recently was VP and general manager of the neurology business unit. He has a B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Texas, Austin, and M.S. degrees in management and chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Scott Carmer has been appointed VP, sales and marketing, Rituxan Immunology. He is responsible for sales and marketing of Rituxan, as well as commercialization of new immunology products. Mr. Carmer, 41, joins Genentech from Amgen, where he was most recently global therapeutic area head in the global inflammatory disorders group. He has a B.S. in biology from the University of Kentucky. Pamela M. Klein, M.D., has been promoted to VP, clinical oncology, hematology, and HER family. Dr. Klein, 44, oversees the clinical science and medical science liaison groups, while continuing to chair the Development Review Committee for all HER family/B-cell activities. Dr. Klein previously was senior director of clinical oncology. Before joining Genentech in 2001, she was at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), where she was research director of the NCI-Navy Breast Care Center. Dr. Klein has a B.S. in cell and molecular biology from California State University, Northridge, and an M.D. from Loyola University’s Stritch School of Medicine. Genentech has also appointed Mary B. Sliwkowski, Ph.D., to VP, regulatory affairs, chemistry manufacturing and controls. She is responsible for the filings of biologic licensing applications, new drug applications, and investigational new drug applications, as well as regulatory submissions for contract manufacturing organization operations. Dr. Sliwkowski, 51, has been promoted to this newly created position from her previous role as senior director, regulatory affairs, product manufacturing, and regulatory submissions operations. She has been with Genentech since 1985. She has a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Delaware and a doctorate in biochemistry from North Carolina State University. Dr. Juergen Lasowski NPS Names Senior VP NPS Pharmaceuticals, Salt Lake City, has appointed Juergen Lasowski, Ph.D., as senior VP of corporate development. NPS discovers, develops, and commercializes small molecules and recombinant proteins as drugs, primarily for the treatment of metabolic, bone and mineral, and central nervous system disorders. Dr. Lasowski is responsible for the company’s corporate and business development efforts. He has come to NPS from Sanofi-Aventis, where he was VP of business development and strategy. Dr. David R. Parkinson Biogen Idec Appoints Head of Oncology R&D David R. Parkinson, M.D., has been named senior VP, oncology research and development, for Biogen Idec, Cambridge, Mass., a biotechnology company with a particular focus on oncology, neurology, and immunology therapeutics. Dr. Parkinson is based at the company’s San Diego office, where he oversees all oncology discovery research efforts. Additionally, he is charged with the development of the oncology pipeline. Previously, he was VP, oncology development, at Amgen. He has an M.D. from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine. David L. Stern Serono Names Executive VP, Metabolic Endocrinology David L. Stern has been promoted to executive VP, metabolic endocrinology, at Serono, Rockland, Mass., the U.S. subsidiary of global biotechnology company Serono SA. He manages all U.S. commercial operations for the company’s metabolic product portfolio, including sales, marketing, and medical-affairs functions. Previously, Mr. Stern was VP of marketing, metabolic endocrinology. Before joining Serono, he was director of reproductive marketing at Organon USA. Gast Genaera Appoints Clinical R&D Leader Michael J. Lobeck Dr. Harindranath (Hari) Nagaradona Kendle Adds Staff Kendle has appointed Frank G. Lobeck, Pharm.D., as clinical project group leader. Dr. Lobeck is responsible for the direction of Phase I-III clinical development projects for the company’s biopharmaceutical customers. Dr. Lobeck brings to the CRO more than 23 years experience, most recently as director of development operations at Pfizer. He holds doctoral and B.S. degrees in pharmacy from Wayne State University. Kendle also has hired Harindranath (Hari) Nagaradona, Ph.D., as senior regulatory consultant. Based in Rockville, Md., Dr. Nagaradona assists customers with questions regarding biologics, nonclinical studies, genomics, validations, and regulatory strategies. He earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the Indian Institute of Science, and he has a graduate certificate in information systems from Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Colleen McAuliffe Omnicare Promotes Senior VP, Project Management Omnicare Clinical Research, King of Prussia, Pa., a full-service, global CRO, has promoted Colleen McAuliffe, Ph.D., to senior VP, project management, Americas. Dr. McAuliffe joined Omnicare Clinical Research in 2001 and most recently held the position of VP, global strategic account business operations leader. She has a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, a master’s of public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.A. from Montclair State University, an M.S. from Long Island University, and an MBA from LaSalle University. Dr. Denis R. Miller Parexel Clinical Research Services Adds Staff Denis R. Miller, M.D., has been appointed senior medical director at Parexel Clinical Research Services, a unit of the global biopharmaceutical services company Parexel International. A foremost oncology and hematology expert, Dr. Miller serves as clinical practice leader and provides consultation to clients sponsoring clinical trials in hematology and oncology. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Miller has held senior positions in pharmaceutical R&D and clinical oncology at clinical research organizations and pharmaceutical companies, including Roche and Johnson & Johnson. Board certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology, Dr. Miller holds A.B. and M.D. degrees from Cornell University.
