Mycoplasma is a common cell culture contaminant. Due to its small size, Mycoplasma cannot be detected by standard light microscopy. In addition, Mycoplasma is gram negative and therefore resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics routinely used in cell culture. When manufacturing cell-based vaccines, biologics, and gene therapies, Mycoplasma-free batches are critical for patient safety.
