Supporting Clinical Trial Site Selection During the COVID-19 Pandemic Using WAVE, a Hybrid Epidemiologic Model

This recent webinar covers a new model for planning trials, which will be illustrated through several case studies. The on-demand recording is now available.

Overview

During the COVID-19 pandemic, clinical trials of potential vaccines or treatments need to find study sites in areas that are expected to see many cases during the patient enrollment period (in the case of treatments) or shortly thereafter (for vaccines); whereas trials in other therapeutic areas would prefer to locate sites in areas away from hotspots and not expected to see case surges. In either case, planning and site selection is greatly aided by an adaptable epidemiologic model that can produce accurate predictions customized to the specific locales of potential sites. In this webinar, such a model, the Weekly Assessment of coVid Epidemiology (WAVE), will be introduced and its use for planning trials will be illustrated through several case studies.

Issues covered in the webinar:

  • Rapid and efficient development of vaccines for SARS-COV-2 and treatments for COVID-19 requires locating sites with sufficient case loads, at the right time
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has also challenged unrelated trials, which are seeing attrition, missing data, and having difficulties maintaining sites and recruiting patients
  • The WAVE (Weekly Assessment of coVid Epidemiology) model forecasts the trajectory of COVID-19 and consists of three modules to address a wide range of potential uses
  • Discover how the Wave Assessment of coVid Epidemiology (WAVE) model can aid planning and site selection during the COVID-19 pandemic by producing accurate predictions customized to the specific locales of potential sites
  • Take a deeper dive into how the WAVE (Weekly Assessment of coVid Epidemiology) model can be used to plan and optimize clinical trials during COVID-19

Attendees of this webinar will understand:

  • How a customizable epidemiologic model can be used to plan and optimize clinical trials during COVID-19
  • How to specify analyses and scenarios
  • How to interpret the predictions in light of the needs of the trial
