Talent Pool Executive Appointments and Promotions in the Healthcare Industry Pharma POOL David J. Kudla Jr. Advancis Creates VP of Quality Assurance Position Advancis Pharmaceutical, a pharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing novel anti-infective products, has named David J. Kudla Jr. to VP of quality assurance, a newly created position. Mr. Kudla oversees a team of compliance and quality assurance professionals, all working to ensure Advancis’ compliance with good manufacturing practices (GMP), quality investigations, auditing, GMP training, documentation management, and FDA interaction. His group also is responsible for administrating the company’s health, safety, and environmental programs. Mr. Kudla joined Advancis, Germantown, Md., in 2001. He previously served as senior director of quality assurance and has more than 20 years of pharmaceutical industry experience. Brian A. Markison Ted G. Wood King Pharmaceuticals Appoints Acting President and CEO Brian A. Markison has been named acting president and CEO of King Pharmaceuticals, Bristol, Tenn., a pharmaceutical company that develops, manufactures, markets, and sells branded prescription pharmaceutical products. The company named Ted G. Wood as nonexecutive chairman. These appointments fill the vacancies created by the resignations of CEO and Chairman Jefferson J. Gregory and President Kyle P. Macione. Before joining King as its chief operating officer in March 2004, Mr. Markison served as president of Bristol-Myers Squibb’s oncology, virology and oncology therapeutics network businesses. Mr. Wood is the former president of The United Company, a position from which he retired in 2002. Mr. Wood graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.S. in commerce and has completed the advanced management program at Harvard University. Marion McCourt David Nicoli AstraZeneca Names U.S. Executive Team Leaders AstraZeneca, an international healthcare business engaged in the research, development, manufacture, and marketing of prescription pharmaceuticals and the supply of healthcare services, has added two VPs to its U.S. leadership team, based in Wilmington, Del. Marion McCourt has been named VP of government affairs, policy, and managed markets, a new position at the company. She most recently served as VP of managed markets and had responsibility for leading the managed-markets business group. Her appointment follows the retirement of Alan Milbauer, VP of public affairs, who was responsible for both the government and public-affairs functions. Ms. McCourt has a B.S. in biology from Lafayette College and is a board member for the Foundation of Managed Care Pharmacy and represents AstraZeneca on the Together Rx Board. David Nicoli has been named VP of communications and external relations. He joined the company from Altria Group, where he most recently served as VP of corporate communications. Mr. Nicoli received his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Minnesota and his juris doctor, magna cum laude, from American University. Biotech POOL Dr. David J. Braitman Celsion Appoints Senior VP of Product Development Celsion, Columbia, Md., a biotechnology company dedicated to the development and commercialization of treatments for cancer and other diseases using focused-heat energy, has appointed David J. Braitman, Ph.D., as senior VP of product development. Dr. Braitman previously was VP of clinical research and managing director of the U.S. affiliate of Medisearch International. He is a graduate of Hunter College and obtained his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from the University of Connecticut. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health, he completed his M.H.S. at The Johns Hopkins University. Biopharmaceutical POOL Jeffrey Hatfield Concurrent Pharmaceuticals Appoints CEO Jeffrey Hatfield has been appointed CEO of Concurrent Pharmaceuticals, Fort Washington, Pa., a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery and development of innovative drugs in major disease areas, including cardiovascular, cancer, dermatology, and metabolics. Mr. Hatfield spent almost 20 years with Bristol-Myers Squibb, most recently as senior VP of the company’s virology division. Mr. Hatfield’s career also has included responsibilities such as president and general manager of BMS-Canada, VP of U.S. managed healthcare for BMS, and a variety of marketing, sales, and general management positions. Mr. Hatfield received a B.S. from Purdue University’s School of Pharmacy and a MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Thomas H. McLain Nabi Names Chairman Nabi Biopharmaceuticals has elected Thomas H. McLain, the current CEO and president, as chairman of the board. Nabi Biopharmaceuticals, based in Boca Raton, Fla., applies its knowledge of the human immune system to commercializing and developing products that address serious, unmet medical needs. David C. Mitchell Immune Response Creates Regulatory Affairs Position Immune Response, a biopharmaceutical company developing immune-based therapies for HIV and multiple sclerosis, has named David C. Mitchell executive director of regulatory affairs. Mr. Mitchell also is responsible for areas related to the worldwide clinical-development programs for both HIV and MS, licensing, and marketing registration. He joins the Carlsbad, Calif.-based company from Biogen Idec, where he was director of regulatory affairs. Mr. Mitchell has B.S. in chemistry from Mississippi College. Specialty POOL Bernard Berk Elite Appoints Chairman Bernard Berk, CEO and president of Elite Pharmaceuticals, has been named to the additional position of chairman. Moore, who remains as a director Dr. Jon B. Bruss PediaMed Fills Executive-Level Regulatory Position PediaMed Pharmaceuticals, which specializes in the health and well-being of children, has named Jon B. Bruss, M.D., MSPH, FAAP, as VP of clinical/medical/regulatory and chief medical officer. Dr. Bruss joins PediaMed, Florence, Ky., from Alarus Development International, a consulting firm specializing in infectious disease and pediatric drug development, which he founded. Pearson, Ph.D., senior VP of sales and marketing. Dr. Pearson is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to leverage the company’s cosmeceutical line to increase sales of its dermatological products and penetration into physicians’ offices. Emerging POOL Edward Kenney Onyx Fills Executive VP and Chief Business Officer Role Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Richmond, Calif., which is engaged in the development of novel cancer therapies that target the molecular basis of cancer, has appointed Edward Kenney executive VP and chief business officer, a newly created position. Mr. Kenney is responsible for all commercial activities, including sales and marketing and business development. CRO POOL Dr. Lyon Gleich Medpace Appoints Medical Affairs Director Medpace, a full-service contract research organization, has named Lyon Gleich, M.D., as director of medical affairs, allowing the Cincinnati-based company to expand its therapeutic expertise into oncology. Dr. Gleich most recently was a professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He was an active clinician and researcher at the University of Cincinnati Barrett Cancer Center for 10 years. Dr. Gleich also served as the chief of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, at the Cincinnati Veterans Administration Medical Center. Dr. Duu-Gong Wu PharmaNet Hires Senior Director, Consulting Division PharmaNet, an international drug development company with U.S. headquarters in Princeton, N.J., has appointed Duu-Gong Wu, Ph.D., as senior director of PharmaNet Consulting. Before joining PharmaNet, Dr. Wu was deputy director of New Drug Chemistry II (DNDC II), with the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), where he supervised technical reviews of chemistry, manufacturing, and controls sections of IND and NDA applications, plus supplemental applications, across six medical-reviewing divisions. Kate Cronin Ogilvy PR Worldwide Names Health and Medical Practice Leader Kate Cronin has joined Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, New York, as managing director and co-head of the agency’s global health and medical practice. Ms. Cronin helps lead the global practice as well as being responsible for the day-to-day operations. Previously, Ms. Cronin was the director of the New York Health Care Practice at Porter Novelli. Levy Adair-Greene Names President Adair-Greene Healthcare Communications, Atlanta, has appointed Jay A. Levy as president of the agency. Adair-Greene is a division of McCann Erickson WorldGroup. In this new role, Mr. Levy, who previously was executive VP and chief operating officer, assumes full executive responsibilities and overall strategic direction for the agency. Previously, Mr. Levy was president of his own business, a direct-marketing company called the Promotional Services Group. He is a graduate of the University of Baltimore.
