Talent Pool July 2005 Executive Appointments and Promotions in the Healthcare Industry Pharma POOL Dr. Marcus Carr Novo Nordisk Names Chief Medical Officer Marcus Carr, M.D., Ph.D., has joined Novo Nordisk as chief medical officer and executive director for clinical research of the hemostasis group for North America. He is based at the pharmaceutical company’s U.S. headquarters in Princeton, N.J. Dr. Carr mostly recently was the founder of Hemodyne. James G. Harmon Organon Pharmaceuticals USA Names VP, Managed Markets Organon Pharmaceuticals USA, Roseland, N.J., has named James G. Harmon as VP of managed markets. Organon, the human healthcare business unit of Akzo Nobel, focuses on developing drugs for reproductive medicine, psychiatry, and anesthesia. Mr. Harmon is responsible for strategy development as well as leadership of account management groups, government accounts, biotech specialty pharmacy, trade relations, pricing, and contracting. Previously, he was executive director, salesforce, customer and diagnostic development, at Watson. Theo Nieuwenhuis Schering-Plough Appoints Leader for Remicade Marketing Schering-Plough, a global healthcare company with headquarters in Kenilworth, N.J., has named Theo Nieuwenhuis as VP of Remicade marketing; he is responsible for international marketing of the anti-TNF therapy. Mr. Nieuwenhuis also manages Schering-Plough’s relationship with Centocor, from which the company has marketing rights to Remicade in all global markets except the United States, Japan, and parts of the Far East. He joined Schering-Plough in 2003 as general manager of The Netherlands. Mr. Nieuwenhuis holds a bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy and a MBA in business management from Kingston University. Dr. Sarah S. Prichard Baxter Names VP, Global Medical Affairs Sarah S. Prichard, M.D., has joined Baxter International, Deerfield, Ill., as VP of global medical affairs for the pharmaceutical company’s renal business. In this position, she provides direction on trends in management of renal disease patients, contributes to the design of new products, leads the design of clinical trials, and works with the scientific community worldwide. Dr. Prichard, 54, joins Baxter from McGill University and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Dr. Prichard received her medical degree from Queen’s University. Biotech POOL Dr. Karl Beutner Anacor Pharmaceuticals Appoints Chief Medical Officer Karl Beutner, M.D., Ph.D., has been named chief medical officer of Anacor Pharmaceuticals, Palo Alto, Calif., a biotechnology company developing novel pharmaceuticals for dermatology. Dr. Beutner, who has more than 25 years of healthcare industry experience, joins Anacor from Dow Pharmaceutical Sciences, where he was VP and chief medical officer. Dr. Beutner earned M.D., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo, School of Medicine. He also holds a B.S. in biology from Saint Mary’s College. He also is an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Robert S. King Dr. Paul Resnick Dr. Carol A. Stratford Rinat Neuroscience Announces Management Changes Rinat Neuroscience, Palo Alto, Calif., which develops and commercializes protein-based therapeutics for the treatment of diseases and disorders of the nervous system, has promoted Robert S. King, Ph.D., to VP, product development and manufacturing. Since joining the biotechnology company in January 2004, he served as senior director, process development and manufacturing. Dr. King earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Paul Resnick, M.D., has been named senior director of business development. Dr. Resnick joins Rinat from Intermune, where he was director of corporate development. Dr. Resnick holds a M.D. from the Medical College of Wisconsin and a MBA from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. Carol A. Stratford, Ph.D., J.D., has been named VP, intellectual property. Most recently, Dr. Stratford ran an independent legal practice. Dr. Stratford received her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law and her Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Michigan. Dr. Richard B. Lanman diaDexus Appoints Chief Medical Officer Richard B. Lanman, M.D., has been named executive VP and chief medical officer for diaDexus, a privately held biotechnology company based in South San Francisco, Calif. Previously, Dr. Lanman served as executive VP, corporate business development, and chief medical officer at Atherotech. He received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School after graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Dr. Mark Payton Oxxon Strengthens Partnering and Commercialization Team Mark Payton, Ph.D., has been promoted to VP of corporate development at Oxxon Therapeutics, a Boston-based biotechnology company developing immunotherapeutics for cancer and chronic infectious diseases. Dr. Payton, who joined the company in 2001 as business development manager, plays a key role in Oxxon’s focus on increasing partnering agreements to advance its pipeline. He holds a Ph.D. in molecular immunology from King’s College, University of London. He has a MBA from the Warwick Business School. Biopharmaceutical POOL Dr. Wayne R. Gombotz Dr. Clark E. Tedford Omeros Appoints VPs Omeros, a Seattle-based biopharmaceutical company, has named Wayne R. Gombotz, Ph.D., as VP of pharmaceutical operations, responsible for overseeing product development and manufacturing of the firm’s pharmaceutical and drug-delivery technology platforms. Previously, Dr. Gombotz was VP of process science and pharmaceutical development for Corixa. He holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in bioengineering from the University of Washington, where he currently is an affiliate faculty member. He earned his B.A. in biology from Colby College. Additionally, Clark E. Tedford, Ph.D., has joined Omeros as VP of research. Dr. Tedford directs the research efforts for the company’s series of pharmaceutical and drug-delivery products. He has primary responsibility for generating preclinical drug and delivery candidates to expand Omeros’ product pipeline. Most recently, Dr. Tedford was president and CEO of Solentix BioSciences. He received his B.A. in biochemistry and his Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Iowa. Roger D. Graham Jr. George R. Maurer Dr. Richard M. Woodward Adolor Announces Key Management Appointments Adolor, Exton, Pa., has appointed Roger D. Graham Jr., to senior VP of sales and marketing. The biopharmaceutical company specializes in the discovery, development, and commercialization of novel prescription pain-management products. In this newly created position, Mr. Graham is responsible for leading the company’s marketing and sales organization. Most recently, Mr. Graham served as the senior VP of sales and marketing at Yamanouchi Pharma America. He holds a MBA from Seton Hall University and a B.S. from the University of Kansas. George R. Maurer has been promoted to VP of commercial manufacturing from senior director of commercial manufacturing. Before joining Adolor, he was director, commercial manufacturing at ViroPharma. Mr. Maurer earned his B.S. in biology from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Adolor also has named Richard M. Woodward, Ph.D., VP of discovery. He oversees discovery research teams in pharmacology, biology, drug metabolism, and toxicology. He previously was senior director of pharmacology at Purdue Pharma. Dr. Woodward earned his Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of London. Dr. David D. Pendergast TKT Appoints President and CEO Transkaryotic Therapies (TKT) has promoted David D. Pendergast, Ph.D., to president and CEO from executive VP and chief operating officer. Dr. Pendergast joined the biopharmaceutical company in 2002 with more than 25 years of pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience. Dr. Pendergast holds a B.A. from Western Michigan University. He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Wisconsin. Specialty POOL Dr. Bruce Lamb LifeCell Appoints Senior VP LifeCell, Branchburg, N.J., has appointed Bruce Lamb, Ph.D., as senior VP, development, regulatory affairs and quality. The company develops biologically based products for the repair and replacement of human tissue. Previously, Dr. Lamb served as VP, biosurgical research and development, at Ethicon. Dr. Lamb earned his B.S. in chemistry from Bradley University, his M.S. in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, and his Ph.D. in polymer chemistry from the State University of New York. Device/Diagnostic POOL Pamela Bunes J&J Veteran Joins Recom as President Recom Managed Systems, Studio City, Calif., a life-sciences company developing a patented heart-monitoring technology, has named Pamela Bunes as CEO and president. Ms. Bunes is responsible for leading the organization as it prepares for the commercialization of the Model 100 Heart Monitor. Her experience in the medical-device arena includes 15 years in the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, with positions at Ethicon Endo-Surgery and, most recently, Biosense Webster. She holds a B.A. in economics and business adminstration from Converse College. Michael S. Gebauer CHF Solutions Names Marketing VP CHF Solutions, a medical-device manufacturer based in Brooklyn Park, Minn., has named Michael S. Gebauer VP of marketing. He is responsible for leading the sales and marketing efforts for the company’s fluid-overload treatment system for congestive heart failure patients. Previously, he spent seven years on the sales and marketing team at Guidant. Mr. Gebauer graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy with a B.S. in operations research. He also earned a MBA from Webster University. Peter L. Minetti Fujirebio Appoints Quality and Regulatory Compliance VP Fujirebio Diagnostics has promoted Peter L. Minetti to VP of quality and regulatory compliance, responsible for implementing and maintaining corporate quality standards, as well as developing policies, procedures, and methods to ensure that all products meet quality and regulatory requirements. Located in Malvern, Pa., Fujirebio Diagnostics specializes in oncology testing. Mr. Minetti, who joined the company in 2000, previously served as director of quality and regulatory compliance. He holds certifications from the American Society for Quality and from the American Production and Inventory Control Society. He earned his B.S. from City College of New York. Discovery POOL Dr. Howard Grossberg Dr. Herbert Henney III Pharmos Strengthens Management Team Pharmos, Iselin, N.J., has appointed Howard Grossberg, M.D., as VP of drug development. Pharmos discovers and develops novel therapeutics to treat a range of indications, with a particular focus on neurological and inflammation-based disorders. He is responsible for product development beyond research and discovery through clinical development and regulatory approval. A board-certified internist, hematologist, and oncologist, Dr. Grossberg has served as a clinical consultant to the company since 2001. Herbert Henney III, Pharm.D., has been promoted to VP of clinical and regulatory affairs from senior director of clinical and regulatory affairs. Dr. Stewart Noble Dr. Andy Shiau Court R. Turner Kalypsys Makes Key Promotions Kalypsys, a small-molecule drug discovery and development company based in San Diego, has promoted Stewart Noble, Ph.D., to VP of discovery chemistry. He joined the company in 2003 as director of chemistry, responsible for managing all chemistry operations and progress of drug targets. Dr. Noble earned his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in chemistry from the University of Birmingham. Andy Shiau, Ph.D, has been promoted to director of biology. Since joining the company in 2004, he has led a group that created the technological infrastructure needed to implement structure-based drug design methods. He earned a bachelor’s degree in molecular and cell biology with highest honors from the University of California at Berkeley and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California at San Francisco. Additionally, Court R. Turner has been promoted to VP of strategic alliances and senior legal counsel. Mr. Turner joined Kalypsys in 2002 as director of legal affairs and has overseen general legal issues for the company, including instrument and pharmaceutical transactions and alliances. Mr. Turner earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from San Diego State University and a J.D. from the University of San Diego. Genomics POOL Stephen Benoit Dr. Tod KIMBELL Sciona Expands Business Development Team Sciona, a Boulder, Colo.-based company specializing in genetic personalization, has appointed Stephen Benoit as VP of sales and marketing. Before joining Sciona, Mr. Benoit was a cofounder of NanoMed Pharmaceuticals. He holds a MBA in finance from Loyola Marymount University. The company also has hired Tod Kimbell, Ph.D., to serve as director of business development. Dr. Kimbell earned his Ph.D. in geochemistry from the University of Texas at Dallas. Emerging POOL Dr. Frank Armstrong Bioaccelerate Holdings Names CEO Bioaccelerate Holdings, a New York-based, emerging drug-development company, has appointed Frank Armstrong, M.D., to the position of CEO. Dr. Armstrong originally joined Bioaccelerate in January 2005 as chief operating officer. He previously served as CEO of Provensis. Lin Betancourt Anthony Rotolo Integrated Communications Builds Creative Team Integrated Communications, a healthcare communications and advertising agency located in Parsippany, N.J., has added two new members to its creative team. Lin Betancourt has been appointed as senior VP, associate creative director, copy. Anthony Rotolo joins the agency as senior VP, associate creative director, art. As a team, they are working on the Novartis cardiovascular franchise. Mary Beth Clark CMI Appoints Senior Director, Media Strategies Communications Media (CMI), King of Prussia, Pa., has named Mary Beth Clark as senior director, media strategies. Ms. Clark has more than 20 years of experience developing media strategies for pharmaceutical, consumer, and business-to-business clients. Most recently, she was VP, media director, at Dudnyk Healthcare Group. Sarah Cochran Geri Tauber Abelson-Taylor Announces Account Appointments Abelson-Taylor, a Chicago-based medical advertising agency, has named Sarah Cochran as account executive. Before joining the agency, Ms. Cochran was the territory sales manager for Mylan-Bertek Pharmaceuticals. She holds a B.S. in marketing from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Geri Tauber has been appointed senior account supervisor, responsible for the team working on Tarceva, a lung cancer treatment from Genentech/OSI and Roche. Ms. Tauber spent eight years at Abelson-Taylor and has returned to the agency after working for Euro RSCG Life as group VP. She is a cum laude graduate of Loyola University-Chicago. Sonja Foster CCX Appoints President Clinical CONNEXION (CCX), a full-service healthcare communications company based in Newtown, Pa., has named Sonja Foster as president. Ms. Foster cofounded CCX in 1999 with Susan Stein, whom she succeeds as president. She formerly served as executive VP. Ms. Stein continues to serve as the CEO of CCX’s parent company, CONNEXION. Philip Hussey PreVision Appoints Group Director for Strategic Marketing PreVision, a multichannel relationship marketing agency based Lincoln, Mass., has named Philip Hussey as VP, group director of strategic marketing services. Most recently, Mr. Hussey was a senior VP/relationship manager with Rapp Collins Worldwide. He holds a MBA from George Washington University and a B.A. from Michigan State University. Michael McDonald GSW Worldwide Names Senior VP GSW Worldwide, a full-service healthcare advertising agency based in Westerville, Ohio, has named Michael McDonald as senior VP, consumer account services. Mr. McDonald brings 30 years of experience in business-to-business and consumer marketing. Most recently, he was managing director at J. Walter Thompson. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. Richard M. Nordstrom McCann Healthcare Network Names Global CEO Richard M. Nordstrom has been named CEO of McCann Healthcare Worldwide, a subsidiary of McCann Worldgroup, New York. In this role, he is responsible for global operations for the entire McCann Healthcare network, which provides integrated marketing solutions for clients. In addition, he serves as executive VP on the parent company’s executive team and is a board member. Mr. Nordstrom, 47, was previously president of Corbett Accel. A graduate of Southern Illinois University, he did postgraduate work in biological studies at the same institution. Katie Pendlay STINSON Builds Design Innovation Team STINSON Brand Innovation, a Chicago-based life-sciences brand consultancy, has named Katie Pendlay to its design innovation team. DeVita Jr. Triple i Names Oncology Expert as CCTO Editor-in-Chief Triple i, Carlstadt N.J., a division of MediMedia USA, has appointed Vincent T. DeVita Jr., M.D., as editor-in-chief of Current Clinical Trials: Oncology (CCTO). In addition, Dr. DeVita also serves MediMedia, Chatham N.J., as chair of its Oncology Advisory Board, with responsibility for the company’s Website, CancerSource.com. Dr. DeVita formerly served as director of the Yale Cancer Center. He is currently the center’s Amy and Joseph Perella Professor of Medicine and Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health as well as the chair of its advisory board. For the past six years, Ms. Higgins has held increasingly important positions in clinical operations management, most recently as director of clinical services. She holds a B.A. in psychology from Rutgers University. ICTI has promoted Marsha B. Rehrer to director, software testing services, from associate director. She holds a B.S. in English from Davis & Elkins College. Jim Macdonell Dr. Kathleen Warner Taratec Announces Management Promotions Jim Macdonell has been promoted to managing partner, industry practices, at Taratec, a life-sciences consultancy based in Bridgewater, N.J., that provides integrated business, information technology, and regulatory compliance services. In this new role, Mr. Macdonell has ultimate responsibility for all of Taratec’s consultants. He has been with the company since 1989, most recently serving as VP of manufacturing and distribution. Mr. Macdonell holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a MBA from Rutgers University.
