Baxter Names VPs

Baxter International, a healthcare company in Deerfield, Ill., has appointed Robert H. Armstrong to the newly created position of VP, research and development, medical devices and adjacent disposables. He is responsible for developing a new R&D Device Center of Excellence. Before joining Baxter, Mr. Armstrong spent more than 20 years at GE Healthcare, most recently as general manager of R&D for CT products, positron emission technology, and nuclear medicine. He has an MBA from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and a B.S. in physics from St. Norbert College. Baxter also has hired Steven Caffe, M.D., as VP of global regulatory affairs and medical vigilance. Dr. Caffe most recently served as U.S. deputy head of regulatory development at Sanofi-Aventis. He earned his M.D. from the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris. Dr. Sol J. Barer Robert J. Hugin Celgene Plans Transition Sol J. Barer, Ph.D., has been named CEO of Celgene, Summit, N.J., an integrated pharmaceutical company. Dr. Barer will succeed John W. Jackson on May 1, 2006. Mr. Jackson will remain chairman of Celgene’s board of directors. Dr. Barer has been a member of the Celgene leadership team since its incorporation in 1986. He has served as president and chief operating officer since 1994. He holds a Ph.D. in organic and physical chemistry from Rutgers University. Additionally, Celgene has appointed Robert J. Hugin to president and chief operating officer. He also assumes his new position on May 1, 2006. Mr. Hugin joined Celgene in 1999 as senior VP and chief financial officer. He has an A.B. from Princeton University and an MBA from the University of Virginia. Dr. Joseph S. Barone Dr. Laurence Downey Solvay Hires and Promotes Joseph S. Barone, M.D., has been named VP of drug safety and surveillance for Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Marietta, Ga., a research-driven pharmaceutical company. In addition to leading the U.S. drug safety and surveillance department, Dr. Barone oversees and directs all postmarketing adverse event collection, evaluation, and reporting activities. Most recently, he was employed by Daiichi Medical Research. He has a medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. Additionally, Laurence Downey, M.D., has been named president and CEO. He succeeds Harold H. Shlevin, Ph.D., who has taken on a position of global responsibility within the Solvay Group. A 25-year veteran of the company, Dr. Downey most recently served as president and CEO of Solvay Pharma in Canada. He has a medical degree from the University of Manchester and a diploma in pharmaceutical medicine from the Royal College of Physicians. Dr. Sef Kurstjens Astellas Appoints U.S. R&D Head Sef Kurstjens, M.D., Ph.D., has been named senior VP of research and development at Astellas Pharma US, Deerfield, Ill., a research-based pharmaceutical company and a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Astellas Pharma. In this role, Dr. Kurstjens oversees the company’s U.S.-based product development efforts. He previously held positions of increasing responsibility at Pfizer Global Research and Development in both Europe and the United States. Dr. Kurstjens has advanced degrees in medicine and experimental physiology from University of the Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg. Dean Slack King Builds Team King Pharmaceuticals has appointed Dean Slack as VP of business development and strategy for its international and strategic marketing research department. Based in Bristol, Tenn., King is a vertically integrated branded pharmaceutical company. Mr. Slack was previously employed at GlaxoSmithKline. He holds an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and a bachelor’s degree in new venture management from Ohio State University. Biotech POOL William C. Whalen MedImmune Expands Management Team MedImmune, a biotechnology company in Gaithersburg, Md., has expanded its management team. William C. Bertrand Jr., has been promoted to senior VP, general counsel, secretary, and corporate compliance officer. Mr. Bertrand has held positions of increasing responsibility in MedImmune’s legal affairs department since 2001. He has a B.S. in biology from Wayne State University and a J.D., cum laude, from University of Wisconsin, Madison. MedImmune also has promoted Genevieve Losonsky, M.D., to VP of clinical development, infectious disease. Since joining the company in 2002, Dr. Losonsky has served as project director for several clinical programs involving MedImmune’s respiratory syncytial virus prevention franchise. Previously, she was an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She has a bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology from New York University and an M.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Anthony Luttrell has been hired as VP of quality. Responsible for the strategic direction of MedImmune’s quality organization, he oversees the quality assurance, quality control, compliance, validation, and clinical quality departments. Mr. Luttrell began consulting with MedImmune in 2000. He has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Spring Arbor College, an MBA from Oakland University, and a certification from the Minnesota Executive Development Program of the Carlson School of Business at the University of Minnesota. Frank J. Malinoski, M.D., Ph.D., has joined the company as VP of medical affairs, infectious disease. Most recently, Dr. Malinoski served as president of his own consulting practice, TD Consultancy. He has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Colby College, a Ph.D. in microbiology from Rutgers University, and an M.D. from Albany Medical College. Robert Walker, M.D., has been promoted to VP of clinical development, inflammatory disease. He oversees clinical trials of new product candidates aimed at preventing or treating various autoimmune and pulmonary diseases. He previously was project director for MedImmune’s intranasal influenza vaccine program and continues to be the senior project lead for that program. He has a B.A. from Vassar College and an M.D. from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. John J. Whalen, M.D., has joined MedImmune as VP of clinical development operations. Dr. Whalen most recently worked for Scirex as general manager of clinical development services. Oswald Robert S. Quinn Dr. Patrick Yang Genentech Hires and Promotes Genentech, a biotechnology company with headquarters in South San Francisco, Calif., has promoted Ian T. Clark, to executive VP. He previously was senior VP of commercial operations. In this new role, he leads Genentech’s commercial operations, including sales, marketing, managed care, commercial development, and commercial operations functions. He joined the company in January 2003 as senior VP and general manager of bio-oncology. Jennifer Cook, 40, has been promoted to the newly created position of VP of market development, responsible for managing market planning, forecasting and business analysis, pricing and publication strategy, international operations, and commercial communications. She most recently served as senior director of market development. Ms. Cook has a B.A. in human biology and an M.S. in biology from Stanford University. She also has an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley. Ashraf Hanna, M.D., Ph.D., has been hired to the newly created position of VP of alliance management and pipeline strategy support, responsible for establishing, implementing, and evaluating alliance-management strategies and processes. Dr. Hanna was most recently VP of Tanox with responsibilities for strategic planning and business development. Dr. Hanna has a B.A. in physics from the University of Chicago, a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University, and an M.D. from the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Ann L. Lee, Ph.D., has joined Genentech as VP of process development, responsible for the development, implementation, and support of clinical and commercial production processes and technologies. Dr. Lee joins Genentech from Merck, where she most recently served as VP of chemical technology and engineering in the manufacturing division. In addition to a B.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University, she earned an M.S. in chemical engineering and a Ph.D. in engineering and applied sciences from Yale University. Quinton C. Oswald has joined Genentech as VP of sales and marketing, tissue growth and repair. In this newly created position, he is responsible for sales and marketing for Lucentis, Lytics, Nutropin, and Pulmozyme. Mr. Oswald previously was senior VP of Novartis Ophthalmics North America. Genentech has appointed Robert S. Quinn as VP of corporate information technology (CIT), business and science applications. He focuses on a variety of IT solutions to support the corporate and commercial functions, as well as research and development. Mr. Quinn comes to Genentech from KLA-Tencor, where he was VP and chief information officer. He has B.A. degrees in economics and accounting from Baldwin-Wallace College. Patrick Yang, Ph.D., has been promoted to executive VP of product operations from senior VP of product operations. He is responsible for the company’s manufacturing, engineering, process development, and supply-chain management organizations. Dr. Yang began his career at Genentech in December 2003 as VP of South San Francisco manufacturing and engineering. Dr. Steven I. Engel Boston Life Sciences Names Senior VP Boston Life Sciences, Hopkintown, Mass., a biotechnology company focused on diagnostic and therapeutic products for central nervous system diseases, has appointed Steven I. Engel, Pharm.D., senior VP of regulatory affairs and quality. Most recently, Dr. Engel was VP of regulatory affairs and quality at AlgoRx. He has an M.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Pharm.D. from the University of Florida. Dr. Elliot Goldstein Grant Yonehiro Maxygen Makes Management Changes Maxygen, a biotechnology company based in Redwood City, Calif., has appointed Elliot Goldstein, M.D., chief operating officer. He has been promoted from senior VP of clinical development and Denmark operations, the position he had held since joining Maxygen in February 2003. He has an M.D. from the University of Aix-Marseille. Grant Yonehiro has been promoted to senior VP, responsible for leading U.S. operations and global business development, from his previous position as VP of business development. Donna Jordan Biovest Names VP Donna Jordan has joined Biovest International as VP of quality control and quality assurance. Based in Worcester, Mass., Biovest develops advanced, individualized immunotherapies for life-threatening cancers of the blood system. Most recently, Ms. Jordan was director of quality systems at RenaMed Biologics. Dr. Robert W. Karr Idera Appoints President Idera Pharmaceuticals, a biotechnology company in Cambridge, Mass., has appointed Robert W. Karr, M.D., as president. Dr. Karr has served on the company’s board of directors since June 2005. He previously was a senior VP of strategic management at Pfizer Global Research and Development. Dr. Karr earned his M.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Dr. G. Allen Nickols Pfizer Veteran Joins Kereos Kereos, St. Louis, a biotechnology company focused on the detection and treatment of cancer, has hired G. Allen Nickols, Ph.D., as VP of biology. He most recently was director of pharmacology and science fellow at Pfizer Global Research & Development. He holds a Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Missouri and is a fellow of the American Heart Association. Martin A. Simonetti VLST Appoints CEO VLST, a Seattle-based biotechnology company focused on therapeutics for autoimmune and inflammatory disorders, has appointed Martin A. Simonetti as president and CEO. Mr. Simonetti brings more than 25 years of biotechnology experience to VLST, most recently as senior VP, chief financial officer, and treasurer of Dendreon. Mr. Simonetti holds an M.S. in nutritional sciences from the University of California, Davis, and an MBA from the University of Santa Clara. Biopharmaceutical POOL Cheryl Anderson ImClone Names VP ImClone Systems, New York, a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to developing oncology treatments, has appointed Cheryl Anderson as VP of regulatory affairs. Ms. Anderson previously served as group director of global oncology regulatory sciences for Bristol-Myers Squibb. She has a B.S. in biochemistry from Southern Connecticut State University. Dr. Gregory I. Berk Fred Vitale Hana Biosciences Strengthens Management Team Hana Biosciences, South San Francisco, Calif., a biopharmaceutical company focused on advancing cancer care, has promoted Gregory I. Berk, M.D, to senior VP and chief medical officer. In this role, Dr. Berk assumes overall leadership of the company’s development pipeline. He had served as VP and chief medical officer since October 2004. He received an M.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and a B.S. from Tulane University. Dr. Diane Cooper Healthpoint Hires Director of Clinical Affairs Diane Cooper, Ph.D., has been appointed director of clinical affairs for tissue management at Healthpoint, Fort Worth, Texas, a specialty pharmaceutical company and affiliate of DFB Pharmaceuticals. She previously served as the worldwide medical director for Johnson & Johnson Wound Management, Ethicon. Evans Omnicare Clinical Research Names CEO Omnicare Clinical Research, King of Prussia, Pa., has appointed Dale B. Evans, Ph.D., as CEO. Previously, Dr. Evans served as president of PeriApproval & Geriatrics Research, a business unit of Omnicare Clinical Research, and as president of global business development and client relations. Herring Covance Elects New Chairman The board of directors for Covance, a comprehensive drug-development services company in Princeton, N.J., has elected Joseph L. Herring to serve as chairman. Mr. Herring continues to serve as Covance’s CEO. He has replaced Christopher A. Kuebler, who retired as chairman at the end of 2005. Since joining the company in September 1996 as corporate VP and general manager of North America early development, Mr. Herring has held positions of increasing responsibility. Before being promoted to CEO in January 2005, he had served as the company’s president and chief operating officer since November 2001.
